With the summer holidays in full flow and following the tragic incident on the 22nd July 2014 when a 10 year old boy died as a result of falling into the River Orchy near Oban, Police Scotland are highlighting the issue of Water Safety.

During the school holidays, and in particular in hot weather, increasing numbers of children put themselves at risk of drowning. On average 40-50 children drown each year in the UK.

The advice from Police Scotland, circulated by Sergeant David Ferguson from Lochgilphead is to keep yourself safe, when you are in, on or beside water – and always follow the Water Safety Code.

The Water Safety Code

Water may look safe, but it can be dangerous. Learn to spot and keep away from dangers. You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water.

The dangers of water include:

  • its coldness
  • its depth – difficult to estimate
  • hidden currents
  • difficulty in getting out of – with steep and slimy banks
  • sunken rubbish – like shopping trolleys and broken glass – which can trap and injure
  • pollution – raw sewage and chemicals from farming practices – which can make you ill
  • no lifeguards are present in informal places.

Always take note of any special flags or notices that are present – to inform you and to warn you of any dangers.

Children should always go with an adult, not by themselves as an adult can point out dangers or help if somebody gets into trouble.

If you see someone in difficulty, tell somebody quickly, preferably a Lifeguard if you are on a formal swimming beach and there is one nearby; or go to the nearest telephone, dial 999, ask for the Police if you’re at an inland water site OR the Coastguard if you’re on a beach.
